Tim Prudhoe appeared in the Belize City Magistrates’ Court on behalf Nimrod Tillet on 19 April in opposition attempts to extradite Tillet to Mexico for the gender-based murder known as “femicide”. There are a number of legal issues at the centre of the application, and which led to scheduling of written arguments on the law and adjournment to 5 June of the hearing of the application. In addition to local legislation providing for extradition, Mexico is one of two jurisdictions (the other being the USA) with which Belize has an extradition treaty. Issues in the case are expected to include probable medical facilities in the Mexican prison system and the effect of rights protected under the Belize Constitution. (20.4.24)
